Conan Christopher O'Brien was born on April 18, 1963, in Brookline, Massachusetts, the third of six children in an Irish Catholic family. His father Thomas was a physician and epidemiologist at Harvard Medical School; his mother Ruth a partner at a Boston law firm. Conan was a prodigiously bookish child who graduated from Brookline High School as valedictorian and attended Harvard University, where he became president of the Harvard Lampoon — the undergraduate humor publication that has produced a remarkable number of major comedy writers and producers — and wrote for The Simpsons at Harvard.
After Harvard, O'Brien wrote for NBC's Saturday Night Live (1988–1991) and then for The Simpsons (1991–1993), where he became a staff writer and producer, writing some of the show's most celebrated episodes including 'Marge vs. the Monorail.' In 1993, at age twenty-nine, he was selected by Lorne Michaels to replace David Letterman as the host of Late Night — a choice that was universally mocked at the time as a laughable miscalculation. NBC gave him a sixteen-week trial, which extended into sixteen years. His Late Night (1993–2009) is now regarded as one of the most creative and distinctive periods in late-night television history.
The Tonight Show debacle of 2009–2010 — in which Jay Leno returned from retirement to reclaim the 11:35 time slot NBC had promised to Conan — became one of the most public and widely discussed episodes in late-night television history, and O'Brien's handling of it demonstrated the ENTP's characteristic combination of genuine wit and principled refusal to play a losing hand as if it were winning. His Comedy Special 'Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television' Tour, produced between the Tonight Show departure and his Conan show launch on TBS, is one of the most successful comedy tours in history. Conan on TBS ran from 2010 to 2021.
O'Brien's podcast Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend, launched in 2018, has become one of the most popular comedy podcasts in the world, demonstrating his capacity to translate his comedic intelligence into every available format.
