Warren Jeffs

Warren Steed Jeffs is a convicted sex offender and the former president of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), a polygamist sect that broke away from the mainstream LDS Church. As the son of FLDS leader Rulon Jeffs, Warren rose to power within the organization, first as a principal at the church's school and then as his father's closest advisor. Upon Rulon Jeffs' death in 2002, Warren assumed leadership of the estimated 10,000-member sect and quickly consolidated absolute authority. He declared himself the sole prophet with a direct line to God, claiming the power to assign wives, reassign families, and expel members from the community. He arranged the marriages of underage girls - some as young as 12 - to older men, including himself. He eventually took over 70 wives, many of them minors. Jeffs controlled every aspect of his followers' lives from the FLDS compounds in Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona, as well as the Yearning for Zion Ranch in Texas. He banished hundreds of young men and boys from the community to eliminate competition for wives, and reassigned the families of men he deemed insufficiently loyal. Placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List in 2006, Jeffs was captured during a routine traffic stop in Nevada. He was convicted in Texas in 2011 on two counts of sexual assault of a child and sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years.
