David Koresh

David Koresh, born Vernon Wayne Howell, led the Branch Davidian religious sect at their compound near Waco, Texas, where he proclaimed himself the final prophet and the "Lamb of God." His leadership culminated in a catastrophic 51-day standoff with federal agents that ended with 76 deaths, including Koresh himself and 25 children. Born to a 14-year-old single mother in Houston, Koresh was raised by his grandparents and struggled academically due to dyslexia. He memorized large portions of the Bible by his teenage years and became obsessed with prophecy. He joined the Branch Davidians in 1981 and gradually took control of the group through a combination of charisma, biblical knowledge, and manipulation. Koresh claimed exclusive right to marriage and sexual relationships within the group, declaring all existing marriages dissolved and taking multiple "spiritual wives," including girls as young as 12. He fathered at least 15 children with various members. He also stockpiled weapons and conducted military-style training, preparing his followers for an apocalyptic confrontation he believed was prophesied. On February 28, 1993, the ATF attempted to serve a search warrant on the compound for illegal weapons. A gun battle erupted, killing four ATF agents and six Davidians. The FBI took over and initiated a 51-day siege. During negotiations, Koresh alternatively promised to surrender and retreated into apocalyptic theology. On April 19, the FBI launched a tear gas assault. A fire broke out in the compound and spread rapidly. Seventy-six people died, including Koresh and 25 children. The cause of the fire remains debated, with evidence suggesting it was started by members inside the compound.
