Timothy Walter Burton was born on August 25, 1958, in Burbank, California — the hometown of Walt Disney Studios and the embodiment of everything American popular culture considered normal, which Burton found suffocating from early childhood. He was a solitary, introverted child who retreated into drawing, horror films, and the construction of private imaginative worlds. He was particularly influenced by Vincent Price. He attended California Institute of the Arts on a Disney scholarship, was hired by Disney in 1980, and produced work the studio found too dark and too strange for its brand.

His departure from Disney freed him to pursue his actual sensibility. Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985) was his theatrical debut; Batman (1989) became the most commercially successful film of the year.
