At age eight, Fincher watched Lucas and his crew shoot American Graffiti on the streets near his house and decided on the spot that he wanted to make films for a living. He was a student who found traditional schooling insufficiently stimulating for his specific obsessions, and he dropped out of high school to take a job at Industrial Light & Magic, the special effects company Lucas had founded, where he worked as a matte photography assistant. The apprenticeship gave him an unorthodox but extraordinarily deep technical education — not in film theory but in the practical mechanics of how images are constructed.
In the mid-1980s, Fincher transitioned from ILM to directing television commercials and music videos, where he developed one of the most visually distinctive voices in the medium.
