Avram Noam Chomsky was born on December 7, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Ukrainian Jewish immigrant parents. His father William was a Hebrew scholar, and the household was intellectually saturated: Noam grew up reading, arguing, and thinking as a form of natural activity rather than as exceptional effort. He began attending the University of Pennsylvania at sixteen, where he encountered the linguist Zellig Harris, whose structuralist linguistics Chomsky found stimulating but ultimately insufficient. He completed his PhD in linguistics in 1955 with a dissertation that would eventually become his first major book, Syntactic Structures, published in 1957.

Syntactic Structures, and the fuller theoretical elaboration in Aspects of the Theory of Syntax (1965), constituted what has been called the Chomsky revolution in linguistics: the demonstration that human language is governed not by learned behavioral habits, as the behaviorist B.F. Skinner had argued, but by an innate universal grammar — a genetic endowment that all humans share and that makes the child's acquisition of any language a process of parameter-setting rather than of behavioral conditioning. Chomsky's review of Skinner's Verbal Behavior (1959) is one of the most devastating critiques in the history of science, and it effectively ended behaviorism's dominance in psychology. The MIT Institute Professor devoted his professional career to developing generative linguistics while simultaneously pursuing a parallel career as the most prominent left-wing political intellectual in America.

Chomsky's political writing began in earnest with American Power and the New Mandarins (1969), a critique of intellectual complicity in the Vietnam War. Manufacturing Consent (1988), co-authored with Edward Herman, presented a 'propaganda model' of mass media that argued corporate media systematically filters news to serve elite interests. Over the following decades, Chomsky became the most cited scholar alive, producing a stream of books, articles, and lectures on US foreign policy, the media, capitalism, and anarchist political theory. He combined extraordinary academic productivity in linguistics with an equally extraordinary output of political commentary, maintaining the INTP's characteristic independence from ideological orthodoxy while consistently applying the same analytical frameworks across both domains.

Chomsky's legacy in linguistics is contested — some successors have moved away from universal grammar, and Minimalism, his most recent theoretical framework, has proved controversial — but his overall contribution to the field is undeniable: he made linguistics a formal science, established the centrality of syntactic structure, and provoked generations of researchers to think more rigorously about the relationship between language and mind. His political writing has been equally influential if equally divisive: he is admired as one of the few consistently principled voices in American political discourse and criticized as reflexively anti-American. At ninety-seven, he continues to write and lecture.
