Biography
Osama bin Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden was a Saudi-born founder and leader of al-Qaeda, the organization responsible for the September 11, 2001 attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.
Born into a wealthy Saudi family (his father was a billionaire construction magnate), bin Laden became radicalized during the Soviet-Afghan War in the 1980s, where he helped organize Arab volunteer fighters. After the war, he formed al-Qaeda in 1988 with the goal of continuing global jihad.
Bin Laden's ideology combined Salafi jihadism with anti-American politics. He issued fatwas calling for Muslims to kill Americans, viewing U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East as a war against Islam. Under his leadership, al-Qaeda orchestrated the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings, the USS Cole attack, and ultimately the 9/11 attacks.
Bin Laden evaded capture for nearly a decade after 9/11, hiding in Pakistan. He was killed by U.S. Navy SEALs during a raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on May 2, 2011.
