John Winston Lennon was born on October 9, 1940, in Liverpool, during a German bombing raid on the city. His parents' instability led to him being raised primarily by his maternal aunt Mimi Smith, while his mother Julia — warm, music-loving, but intermittently present — lived nearby. Julia was killed by a drunk driver in 1958 when John was seventeen. The Quarrymen, formed by Lennon in 1956, became the Beatles in 1960 with the addition of Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

The Beatles' cultural impact from 1963 to 1970 remains without historical parallel in popular music. Lennon's partnership with McCartney produced some of the most perfectly constructed pop songs in history, while his solo voice — more intellectually restless, more politically confrontational — waited for the band's dissolution to find its fullest expression. His relationship with Yoko Ono, beginning in 1966, became the dominant creative and personal partnership of his adult life.

The Bed-Ins for Peace in Amsterdam and Montreal (1969), 'Give Peace a Chance,' and the album Imagine (1971) — whose title track articulates a vision of universal peace so directly expressed that it has become the most-sung secular prayer in the world — were products of this partnership and this freedom. His deportation battle with the US government (1972–1975), fought over his 1968 drug conviction, was itself a Lennon performance: the absurdity of the world's most famous pacifist being considered a national security threat deployed as political theater.

Lennon was murdered on December 8, 1980, outside his New York apartment by Mark David Chapman, at forty. His INFP quality permeates his legacy: the extraordinary emotional honesty of 'Mother,' 'Jealous Guy,' and 'Working Class Hero'; the refusal to maintain a comfortable public persona; and the genuine personal idealism that made 'Imagine' not a political statement but a spiritual one — an INFP's vision of what the world could be if human beings were willing to prioritize their shared reality over their constructed divisions.
