Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, the elder daughter of two immigrant graduate students who had met at a Berkeley civil rights meeting: Shyamala Gopalan, a Tamil Indian cancer researcher from Chennai, and Donald Harris, a Jamaican-American economics professor who would later join the Stanford faculty. Her parents divorced when she was seven, and she was raised primarily by her mother in a household where the civil rights movement was not history but daily practice — childhood weekends regularly included protest marches. She spent childhood summers in India visiting her maternal grandfather, P.V. Gopalan, a retired civil servant who had been part of India's independence movement, giving her a transnational perspective on political struggle that would distinguish her public voice throughout her career.
Harris enrolled at Howard University, one of America's most prestigious historically Black universities — a deliberate choice over predominantly white elite institutions, a strategic statement about identity and community that is characteristically ENTJ in its understanding that where you stand shapes what you can see and who will trust you. After law school at UC Hastings, she joined the Alameda County District Attorney's Office and rose rapidly. In 2003, she won election as San Francisco District Attorney — the first woman and first Black person to hold the office — and pursued an unusually data-driven, reform-oriented approach to prosecution that earned respect from both progressives and law enforcement. As California Attorney General from 2010, she led the largest state Department of Justice in the country and won a $20 billion settlement from mortgage servicers who had defrauded California homeowners.
Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016, the second Black woman ever elected to that body. Her Senate Judiciary Committee questioning of witnesses during Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court confirmation hearings was nationally televised and became the moment her national profile crystallized: a former prosecutor applying the cross-examiner's discipline to a political hearing, with the prosecutor's ability to make witnesses reveal more than they intended. Joe Biden selected her as his running mate in August 2020, and on January 20, 2021, she was inaugurated as the 49th Vice President of the United States — the first woman, first Black American, and first person of South Asian descent to hold the office.
In July 2024, following Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race, Harris secured the Democratic nomination with unprecedented speed — the fastest consolidation of major-party support in modern primary history. She ran against Donald Trump in a compressed eight-week campaign, winning the popular vote before losing the Electoral College. Harris reflects the ENTJ's defining professional trajectory: the systematic accumulation of institutional credentials at precisely the right moments, the strategic positioning for each successive office as preparation for the next, and the capacity to inspire confidence across constituencies — prosecutors and progressives, Black women and South Asian diaspora communities — that might otherwise see each other as competitors rather than coalition partners.
