Rachel Meghan Markle was born on August 4, 1981, in Los Angeles, California, to Thomas Markle, a television lighting director, and Doria Ragland, a social worker and yoga instructor. Her parents divorced when she was six, and she has described her childhood as characterized by the experience of existing between categories โ biracial in a society that frequently demanded she choose a category, the child of a mixed family that didn't fit the cultural boxes available to her.
