Heinrich Himmler

Heinrich Luitpold Himmler was one of the most powerful men in Nazi Germany, serving as head of the SS, Chief of German Police, and architect of the Holocaust. A failed chicken farmer with a degree in agronomy, Himmler joined the Nazi Party early and rose to become Hitler's most loyal and capable administrator of genocide. Himmler transformed the SS from Hitler's small bodyguard unit into a massive paramilitary organization that controlled the concentration camp system, the Gestapo secret police, and the Waffen-SS military units. He was obsessed with racial purity and personally oversaw the implementation of the "Final Solution." Despite orchestrating industrialized mass murder, Himmler was squeamish about direct violence. He reportedly nearly fainted when witnessing an execution. He preferred to manage genocide from his desk, reducing murder to paperwork and logistics. As Germany collapsed in 1945, Himmler attempted to negotiate secretly with the Allies, hoping to preserve himself. Hitler expelled him from the Nazi Party upon learning of this betrayal. Captured while attempting to flee in disguise, Himmler committed suicide by biting a cyanide capsule on May 23, 1945.
