Adolf Hitler

Adolf Hitler rose from failed artist and World War I corporal to become the dictator of Nazi Germany, ultimately causing the deaths of tens of millions in World War II and the Holocaust. Born in Austria, Hitler developed his antisemitic ideology in Vienna before serving in WWI. After the war, he joined the German Workers' Party (later Nazi Party) and discovered his talent for inflammatory oratory. His failed Beer Hall Putsch (1923) led to imprisonment, where he wrote "Mein Kampf." Through a combination of propaganda, intimidation, and political maneuvering, Hitler became Chancellor in 1933 and quickly consolidated absolute power. He rebuilt Germany's military, annexed Austria and Czechoslovakia, then invaded Poland in 1939, triggering WWII. Hitler's "Final Solution" resulted in the systematic murder of 6 million Jews in concentration camps. As Allied forces closed in on Berlin in April 1945, Hitler committed suicide in his underground bunker.
