Tupac Amaru Shakur was born on June 16, 1971, in East Harlem, New York City, to Afeni Shakur โ a Black Panther activist who was acquitted of bomb conspiracy charges while pregnant with Tupac โ and Billy Garland. His childhood was marked by poverty and constant relocation as his mother struggled with crack cocaine addiction, moving between New York, Baltimore, and eventually Marin City, California. The Baltimore School for the Arts, where he studied acting, poetry, and dance from 1986 to 1988, was a powerful experience: he played the Mouse King in The Nutcracker and performed Shakespeare, developing the theatrical intelligence that would make him one of the most compelling performers in hip-hop history.
Tupac joined the Bay Area rap group Digital Underground as a dancer and backup rapper in 1990, releasing his debut solo album 2Pacalypse Now in 1991.
