John Wayne Gacy

John Wayne Gacy was one of America's most prolific serial killers, hiding his crimes behind a carefully constructed public image as a generous community member, successful contractor, and beloved children's party clown known as "Pogo the Clown." Growing up in Chicago, Gacy had a difficult relationship with his alcoholic father, who physically and emotionally abused him. Despite this, Gacy became an active community member, joining the Jaycees and eventually becoming vice-president of the Springfield, Illinois chapter. After serving time for sodomy of a teenage boy in Iowa (1968-1970), Gacy moved to Norwood Park Township near Chicago, where he rebuilt his public image. He started a successful construction company, became active in Democratic Party politics, organized community events, and performed as "Pogo the Clown" at children's parties and charity events. He was even photographed with First Lady Rosalynn Carter. Between 1972 and 1978, Gacy lured at least 33 young men and teenage boys to his home, where he tortured, sexually assaulted, and murdered them. He buried 26 of his victims in the crawl space beneath his house, disposed of three others on his property, and threw four into the Des Plaines River. His final victim, 15-year-old Robert Piest, disappeared after telling his mother he was going to talk to a contractor about a job. The subsequent investigation led police to Gacy's home, where the horrific discovery in the crawl space shocked the nation. Gacy was convicted of 33 murders and executed by lethal injection in 1994.
