Charles Manson

Charles Milles Manson spent most of his early life in and out of reform schools and prisons. Upon his release in 1967, he arrived in San Francisco during the Summer of Love and began gathering followers who would become the "Manson Family." Manson was a master manipulator who used psychedelic drugs, isolation, and psychological techniques to control his mostly young, female followers. He developed an apocalyptic philosophy called "Helter Skelter" (named after the Beatles song), predicting an imminent race war from which he and his family would emerge as leaders. In August 1969, Manson directed his followers to commit the brutal murders of actress Sharon Tate and four others at her home, followed by the LaBianca murders the next night. The killers wrote messages in blood at the scenes, including "Helter Skelter." Manson was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in 1971. Though he never personally killed anyone during the crime spree, he was held responsible for orchestrating the murders. He died in prison in 2017.
